Essequibo: In excess of 10,000 thousand acres of rice have already been sown on the Essequibo Coast,for the Authum crop, according to General Manager of the Guyana Rice Development Board(GRDB),Jagnarine Singh.
Singh said that up to 17, May a total of 10,588 acres were sown pronouncing cultivation for the crop will increase by some 36,000 acres on the Coast.
He explained that farmers are given payments from a $2.5B provided by the Government based on the shipment agreement to Venezuela.
Shipment of rice and paddy to Venezuela will commence in several weeks time. Singh added the shipment takes three weeks because of the containers and tran- shipment points,while paddy takes three days to land.
Millers are in the process of transporting rice to Georgetown in preparation for shipment.
