Georgetown : The Ministry of Agriculture, through the National Drainage and Irrigation Authority (NDIA) is working to ensure a full level of preparedness of the country’s drainage system is in place to meet any likely flooding situation in low lying areas during the current rainy season.
Minister of Agriculture Dr. Leslie Ramsammy said the NDIA, in co-ordination with all the concerned local authorities has been monitoring the various pumps and sluices and working to correct those few identified as being defective, in light of the forecast of more rains.
Even as the ministry has successfully handled the rains thus far, Minister Ramsammy admitted that there has been some slippage. “We have had minor problems but by and large we have handled the rainy season, with a fair deal of success, thus far… we have 128 pumps that operate along the Coast of Guyana by various authorities, and most are in a working state…there are about four-five pumps with some problems, and we are ensuring that before the next big rain comes, there are in working condition,” he said.
Meanwhile the Agriculture Minister reported that thus far, the rainy season has had some impact on rice, but fortunately 96 percent of the first crop has been harvested. One region significantly affected is Region Five, where the rain is affecting the eight percent that is still on the ground, Minister Ramsammy said.
