Georgetown: The Region Six, East Berbice-Corentyne, Regional Democratic Council (RDC) held their opening of Regional Awards as it relates to Capital Expenditure of the region on Tuesday last.
Bids were opened by Regional Procurement and Tender Administration Board in the presence of bidders at its office. According to Regional Executive Officer Kim Williams-Stephen, the process was open to bidders to witness since this in keeping with the transparency and efficiency of the Regional Administration,
Contracts for 16 developmental projects in the region were opened. These include the extension of block ‘B’ Admin Building Vryman’s Erven; the construction of a Heavy-Duty bridge linking Number 76 and Number 77 housing schemes in Corentyne. This particular project Williams-Stephen noted will provide the residents with ease of access to health care services and educational facilities.
Also, among the works is the rehabilitation of First and Second streets in the Edinburgh Housing Scheme, East Bank Berbice and the rehabilitation of Ogleton Street, Angoy’s Avenue New Amsterdam. According to the Regional Executive Officer, over 500 residents will benefit from this project.
Another project is the construction of the Albion Fishermen’s Wharf in the Corentyne area. This development is in keeping with the region’s mandate to provide services to not only the cash crop and rice farmers but to also support the fisherfolk to ply their trade in comfort.
Williams-Stephen said the emphasis is also being placed on the education sector with the rehabilitation of the Kildonan and Leeds Primary Schools as well as the extension of the Technical Drawing Resource Room at the Berbice Educational Institute. Also, the supply and delivery of Type A, B, C and D desks and benches, teachers’ tables, cupboards and chalkboards. She said with the provision of essential furniture and equipment both students and teachers will benefit.
The REO noted that this is the first “regional awards opening” for 2019 and encouraged those persons who have submitted bids to attend the openings and witness the exercises.
Region Six has been allocated $744Million to execute Public Infrastructure projects and improvement/upgrades within the health care, education and agriculture sectors.
