Arouca: All 17 of the men detained are tonight now free. The men walked from the Detention Centre in Arouca just after 7pm this evening.
Police officers had until today to lay charges against the men, who were detained under special orders permitted by the State of Emergency. The men were charged over a period of 14 to seven days ago and were being held at the Detention Centre in Arouca as well as in the Maximum Security Prison in the same community.
Because the State of Emergency was due to end at midnight, police officers were compelled to bring evidence against the men since the detention orders under which they were being held were also about to expire.
However at a news briefing earlier today police officers confirmed they had not gathered enough evidence to charge the men.
Among those detained was Selwyn "Robocop" Alexis. Police had claimed they found pictures of the Prime Minister and Attorney General at his home with "X" marks across them. Robocop told reporters after leaving the prison that he had campaigned on behalf of the government during the 2010 elections and has no motive to assassinate the prime minister of destabalise the country.
