Berbice : Police in Berbice up to late last night were hunting a second suspect in the slaying of a 17-year-old Number 70 village boy that occurred sometime after 19:30h on Sunday.
One of the suspects called “Joe Joe” is a patient under guard at the New Amsterdam Hospital after he allegedly attempted to commit suicide by cutting his neck subsequent to the chopping of the teen; the other suspect is still in hiding.
Dead is Sasenarine “Suraj” Persaud,17. According to his mother, Vidya Somai the deceased was sent to purchase a pack of mosquito coils. On his way to the shop, he encountered his stepfather, Naresh, in the middle of a verbal confrontation with two other men along the Number 70 Village Middle Walk dam. The deceased reportedly tried to make peace and advised his stepfather to go home because he was drunk.
During the commotion, one of the suspects allegedly dealt the teenager several blows and then chopped him with a cutlass under his left arm, while a second man allegedly stabbed the teen in his heart. The gravely injured teen was pronounced dead on arrival at the Skeldon Hospital where his body is awaiting a post-mortem.
