Georgetown : The Ministry of Culture Youth and Sport awarded a $176M contract to BK International for the construction of two stands at the northern side of the National Synthetic track, located at Leonora, West Coast Demerara.

The two stands will be designed with reinforced concrete structure, metal roofs and prefabricated stanchion at the sides using stainless steel. Each will be able to hold 1500 people and the construction is expected to be completed by November this year.

Minister of Culture Youth and Sport, Dr. Frank Anthony stated that this project is one of the flagship programmes by the ministry, and it has been working hard to complete it in a timely manner. He added that the project date will be close to the end of 2014, and this is depending on enough resources provided through the 2013 National Budget.

The stands will be constructed in stages and once completed will accommodate about10, 000 people in total.

“We have been monitoring the contractors that are on the ground, some contractors have lacked some way of the other, but we have been very pleased with the recovery we have seen so far,” Minister Anthony explained.

The overall project will see a total of $1.4B invested by Government

Permanent Secretary Alfred King stated that work has begun on the inner field in terms of lifting its altitude by about five feet. A retaining wall had to be constructed to ensure that materials are secured.

King said that the outer track is at a level where the crusher- run is being applied and awaiting REGUPOL to lay the artificial track itself. There are also the external drains, curb walls; the walkway and the outer perimeter drain which is expected to be completed by next month.
