$2.5M annually to be paid by broadcasters

Bibi ShadickGeorgetown: A number of broadcasters have been granted approval by the Guyana National Broadcasting Authority  to continue with their operations, according to Chairperson of the GNBA, Bibi Shadick announced Wednesday.

Some others have been given more time to make their applications. Shadick said both radio and television broadcasters will be paying more than $2.5 Million annually. However, if the broadcasters are new or 3% of their annual earnings is less than $2.5 Million, they will be paying less than the annual licensing fee of $2.5 Million. A number of broadcasters are already expressing their concerns about the licensing fees which they consider exorbitant.
The GNBA Chairman noted the broadcasting field in Guyana could be compared to squatter settlements and there is a need for regularisation.
