Georgetown : The Government has again come to the rescue of the Georgetown Mayor and City Council (M&CC) giving $200M for the clearance of debt, payment of workers and improving the aesthetics of the capital.
Officials of the municipality met President Bharrat Jagdeo at the Office of the President today in the company of Minister of Local Government and Regional Development Norman Whittaker and Permanent Secretary Nigel Dharamlall, Minister of Finance Dr. Ashni Singh, Minister of Transport and Hydraulics Robeson Benn and President of the Federation of Independent Trade Unions ,Carvil Duncan
The City Hall representatives included Deputy Mayor Robert Williams, Town Clerk treasurer and other senior functionaries who argued the case that debt clearance and worker remuneration remain hurdles in spite of the council’s best efforts.
Delays in payment by the M&CC recently forced garbage contractors to withdraw their services in protest, leaving a pile up of garbage in certain sections of the city posing several concerns for persons in the vicinity.
On August 5 Minister Whittaker visited various areas in Georgetown to have a firsthand look at the garbage situation in the company of Town Clerk Yonette Pluck.
Visits were made to the Stabroek Market area, High Street between Regent and Robb Streets and Bourda Market among other areas and Minister Whittaker spoke about plans to engage the private sector on proper garbage disposal and management practices.
