$21.3 billion approved for Health sector

IMG_4175Georgetown: The National Assembly has given its approval to Government’s 2015 health spending plan.

The measures, approved late last evening includes an total appropriation of  $6.612 billion incurred under the former Ministry of  Health, during the period January to August.

It also covers $5.987 billion for the new Ministry of Public Health for interventions for the period, September to December.

The provision to the Ministry of Public Health include provision for  Policy development and administration-$366.072 million; Disease control-$946.240 million; Primary health care services-$238.131  million; Regional and clinical services-$3.859 billion; Health science education-$234.437 million; Standard and technical services-$253.100 million and Disability and Rehabilitation services-$90.057 million.

Under the Disease Control, a provision of $10.360 million has been allocated for the purchase of land and water transportation. Asked to provide clarification as to the where these vehicle will be utilized, Minister of Public Health Dr. George Norton informed the House that the vehicles purchased will be used to strengthen vector control in the different regions.

The Minister also later clarified that another provision $7.65 million that has been appropriated for the purchase of equipment, similarly aims at strengthen the vector control service in the regions. He explained that the  purchase equipment will be placed where the Malaria disease is prevalent.

Minister Norton also provided details as to an allocation of $89.271 million under the regional and clinical services. He explained that it caters for the intervention at several health facilities including at Port Kaituma, and at the Canteen at Linden Hospital Complex facilities.

An allocation of  $320.458 million, Minister Norton said provides for  the completion of the  maternity ward and operating theatre, extension of the renal centre at  the Industry health centre, rehabilitation of library, purchase of ambulances and purchase of medical and non-medical equipment. He noted that the commencement of these interventions was provided for under the GPHC 2015 Budget.
