San Fernando:The government has faced another blow in efforts to put a dent on illegal gangs as 22 men and two women arrested in South Trinidad under the Anti-Gang legislation were today freed after Director of Public Prosecutions Roger Gaspard again said there is simply no evidence to pursue a case against them.
Attorney Subhas Panday who represented ten of the freed men is now calling for the legislation to be reviewed.
Telling the court there was no evidence to prosecute them, the DPP ’s office took the decision to discontinue the matters. Only yesterday the police service revealed that 147 people held for gang activity were released.
Outside the court one of three brothers who were held five days into the State of Emergency, says while he is pleased to be released, he sees his arrest as a travesty of justice.
Panday says its the second time the DPP has been forced to discontinue cases and he beleives government must be careful when it comes to the law being used.
