Sharma responded to President’s statements of smoke screen

Georgetown : Managing Director of CNS TV 6 ChandraNarine Sharma defended his recent statements of being harassed by the Authorities forcing him to sack Christopher Ram and & Raymond Gaskin Show “Keeping them Honest”, something that President Bharrat Jagdeo said is a smoke screen to divert attention from a licence suspension.

The President yesterday claimed “Late at night I got a call from Mrs. Sharma saying to me that, if they were to remove Christopher Ram’s programme and if they were to transfer the licences from Sharma’s name to her name whether they would avoid sanctions. I said to her clearly this is not a negotiation… there is one matter before me, that it is a matter that came from the ACB recommending a minimum of six months suspension and that is the matter I’m considering.”

A close source to the Sharmas told TrakkerNews Mrs Sharma did call the President last week from the United States where she is attending a family function but only on the President's request.

CN Sharma in clearing the air said a message was sent to his wife from a Government official to Savitree Sharma in the USA to call the President and a number was provided. Sharma said at this point of time he does not want to disclose the name of the official and Jagdeo should be ashamed to deny that.

President Jagdeo however sought to clear the air on the issue as he is to make a pronouncement within one week on an Advisory Committee on Broadcasting (ACB) recommendation for the broadcast licence of the television station owner to be suspended for a period of six months.

The ACB’s recommendation stemmed from a complaint lodged by Chairman of the Ethnic Relations Commission Bishop Juan Edghil to the body about an “offensive commentary” aired on Sharma’s television station.
The move by Bishop Edghill was made on the grounds of libel and according to the President the offensive commentary made several attempts to incite division among people along the lines of religious beliefs.
