Georgetown: Government will be allocating GUY$26M for the construction of the 1823 slave rebellion monument on Carifesta Avenue, Georgetown.
After months of planning the design for monument, contract documents were handed over to the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport by NABI’s contracting firm.
Project Manager of NABI’s construction Sean Cox says works will be completed within four months time.
Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport Dr. Frank Anthony noted that when the monument is completed individuals visiting the site must take into consideration the significance of what the monument represents.
The monument is expected to be a structure of high quality and artistically wrought to symbolize in its composite and/or overall statement, an image worthy of acceptance as an icon of the 1823 Revolt. The nature, structure, size, medium and location of the monument are to be suggested by the designer or artist. The structure must be a fitting memorial at a location which has emotional and physical connect to the descendants of the People of African descent who were enslaved on the sugar cane plantations, revolted against their enslavement, were killed or executed and their remains left as public spectacle at the parade ground in Georgetown .
