Georgetown : The Alliance For Change in their 45th independence anniversary message said, Guyana’s independence was the product of centuries of local and regional struggle for political and economic autonomy and self-rule. A struggle which stretches back as far as acts of maroonage on the slave plantations of the Guiana colonies and which culminated in the industrial agitation and unrest of the first half of the 20th century.
Forty five years later, we have remained mired and paralyzed by these crippling legacies. Thus, the AFC believes that if Guyana is to meaningfully experience the notion of independence, we must adopt considered measures to cultivate and husband ethnic unity and harmony and moreover activate real and robust economic growth.
The AFC urges participation in the various observances to mark independence but also implore that these ideas central to the potential of nationhood must be kept on the forefront of the people’s consciousness.
