Although there is no broadcast legislation in Guyana, the advisory committee on broadcasting ( ACB ) headed by the lone member Evan Persaud calls for broadcasting houses to take caution when transmitting the changing times of music videos.
The ACB call came with the steady influx of Caribbean Chutney music with lyrics of the use of RUM. This they say sends a wrong message to the young people of Guyana since statistics shows the increase domestic violence and suicide stems from the abuse of alcohol.
According to some sections of the Guyanese society over the past three to four years the chutney songs coming especially out from Trinidad has negative messages with the over use of rum.
The ACB is not demanding to get the music videos off the air completely but to be properly monitored and play at a time when the younger generation is not watching television.
But will this help the situation when the actual access to alcoholic beverages is at the reach to anybody and the increase of illegal rum shops.
There is also an increasing rate in TV commercials advertising alcoholic beverages in Guyana.
