President Jadeo reminded the residents at Buxton that his visit there today is non-political.

President Bharrat Jagdeo speaking to a large gathering at Buxton High School commended the efforts by all in the community at empowerment, making reference to the role of the churches, Non Governmental Organisations (NGOs) and most recently, the 170th anniversary committee comprising overseas based Buxtonians. Accompanying the President were Minister of Human Services and Social Security Priya Manickchand, Minister of Public Service Jennifer Westford, Community Development Advisor Odinga Lumumba, Chairman of Region Four Clement Corlette and various representatives of the region and government. Nehemiah Thorne who copped 525 points at the recent National Grade Six Assessment and is headed for Queen’s College gave the welcoming remarks. The traditional welcome also included the singing of the “Buxton Anthem” written by the forefathers, a brief libation by cultural icon Mboya Wood and the presentation of the 170th anniversary magazine. Today’s meeting culminated three weeks of celebrations in the community, formerly named New Orange Nassau, to commemorate its 170th anniversary since purchased by 141 ex-slaves after emancipation. The proud history of the community was reflected at today’s meeting by former Chairman David Jones who spoke of the village’s past flourishing economy and several people of distinction. A landmark site the Tipperary Hall, received promise of major overhaul by President Jagdeo and the outburst of cheerful reactions were testimony to the gratitude of the residents. The Hall has a history dating back more than 80 years and is located south on the Church of God road in the community. It was once the headquarters of the Buxton/Friendship Burial Society and held the reputation as a prominent venue for social events. Over the years the hall however deteriorated and other popular venues were preferred choices for events. There has in the past been a concerted effort to resuscitate the dilapidated venue with input from Buxtonians in the Diaspora and President Jagdeo’s pledge today was considered a big addition to plans. President Jagdeo said he was elated that the past achievements were highlighted but believes that the time has come for the present generation to create its own history.. Realising the value of education and nutrition in the village and across the country, President Jagdeo said work will soon commence between Government and the NGOs in the village for a hot meal programme for the most vulnerable youths in schools. The difficulties which Buxton faced had resulted in the community lagging behind in economic activities and President Jagdeo said plans must be devised to regenerate such activities. Today’s meeting had no political agenda according to President Jagdeo who set the record straight by saying that is fully aware of the views of critics about the visit. He assured residents of his role as President of Guyana at the end of the day. “I am not President for PPP, I am President for Guyana . I campaign on a PPP platform but the day after the election that’s my job,” President Jagdeo said.
