More Than 6000 children benefited from youth camps at Berbice

Thousands of youths of varying age groups and diverse backgrounds benefited from the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport’s youth camps spread across the country. This Friday, all summer camps will end, as youths concentrate on their new school term or other activities. Director within the Ministry’s Youth Department, Carl Brandon, along with other officials from the Ministry yesterday visited the last of the youth camps held at No. 63 village Tagore Memorial High School and No 68 Primary School at Berbice, Region Six. Over 60 youths between the ages of 12 and 17 years have been engaging in productive activities, including poetry, singing of national songs, dancing and skits. The children were generally happy to participate in the camp, as they had the opportunity to interact with persons of similar age groups and were also exposed to issues relating to health, employment, leadership and parenthood. Brandon highlighted that the Ministry’s intention was to place more focus on civic education, in order for children to recognise and appreciate national symbols. He added that they must respect their environment and their health. He commended the children for their initiative to come out on their August vacation and be meaningfully engaged. He also urged them to take their education seriously and stay focused, even though there may be obstacles. The Ministry of Culture Youth and Sport has been hosting annual camps, which started in 1998.
