President Jagdeo charges scholarship graduates to give back to Guyana

Ninety two students successfully completed their bachelor’s and post graduate degrees overseas in various academic fields through Government scholarships via the Ministry of Public Service.
Studies were pursued in Cuba, India, New Zealand, the United States of America, the Commonwealth Secretariat, United Kingdom, Trinidad and Tobago and Jamaica in the areas of medicine, architecture, agriculture, engineering, agronomy, veterinary medicine and computer science.
They were honoured today at a ceremony at the National Cultural Centre by President Bharrat Jagdeo, joined by Minister of Public Service Dr.Jennifer Westford and Cuban Ambassador to Guyana Raul Gortazar Marrero.

President Jagdeo in his charge to the students said that youths are the promise of Guyana and are the principal reason for the state’s investment in their training.
The Head of State added that every Guyanese youth and person has the potential to better fashion the society noting that academic studies are only one aspect of persons becoming well rounded.
He also challenged them to ensure that throughout their career they strive to maintain and develop a strong sense of value and self assertiveness, particularly in a society with challenges.

The Governments of the countries that facilitated the training were also commended by the President who made specific reference to the invaluable support of Cuba.
The President pointed out that because of the magnitude of Cuba’s support to Guyana, which if valued in monetary terms, would exceed US$100M. The calculation is simple, if you look at the courses you completed and you look at the cost of the tuition of the United States of America, it amounts to US$100M
