The Police Force is being urged to step up efforts in fighting the rising problem of domestic violence

The People’s National Congress Reform in its weekly press briefing expressed concerns about the rising scourge of domestic violence which the party says continues almost unabated despite legislation and NGO’s commitment to help. The PNC/R questions the inability of the Guyana Police Force to respond timely in most of these cases.

There were reports that if the police had acted swiftly to carry out their mandates such tragedies may have been avoided. In the case of a thirty one year old woman it is reported that she made a report to the Brickdam Police Station about the murder threat made to her, but was told by officers there that she was "coming too steady " and the officers allegedly refused to take the report. The woman and her friend were subsequently brutally murdered. The party stated such a situation leaves the public to wonder whether the police understands their mandate and whether they can secure the citizens of Guyana.

The PNC/R believes that there should be a special unit in the Guyana Police Force to deal with domestic violence, as well as special procedures to take such reports. The party is adamant that such reports should not only be taken, but acted upon.
