Another execution within 24 hours carries the number of people killed by gunmen to nine, over the past 3 weeks. The concern now is whether Guyana needs professional intervention. The local authorities may be lacking in both resources and investigative capabilities as it regards the sophistication in which these attacks are carried out. Sources close to the CID say that the victims in all these shootings may be loose ends or defaulters in a drug trade that has the society reeling from it’s effects.
Last evening’s killing of two men in their car is said to be a setup based on the nature of events after an anonymous phone call. The men rushed out of their home following the call, and may have been trailed by the killers until the point of attack. Reports are that a police patrol in the area heard the gunshots but took a different direction until the smoke settled. This suggests that either the authorities are aware of what is taking place or they just are afraid to engage, because of matchless fire power. It is strange that in all the so called drug hits over the past weeks, no suspects were held, it is as if these gunmen are untouchables. Apart from high powered spent shells found, the police are yet to find clues of who may be responsible for the spate of attacks.
