Today October 5th, 2010 marks 18 years since the People’s Progressive Party /Civic (PPP/C) returned to office under the leadership of the Late President Cheddi Jagan. The party had campaigned under the theme “Dawn of a New Era- Restore Democracy”.
Over the 18 years the party had four Presidents Dr. Cheddi Jagan, Samuel Hinds, Janet Jagan and Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo.
President Jagdeo at the opening of GuyExpo on September 30th, 2010 said Guyana needs to pro-actively contribute to the shaping of international agreements in trade, climate change and reform of global financial institutions.
In 2009, Guyana was the fastest growing economy in South America, and the second fastest growing in the entire Western Hemisphere.
The International Monetary Fund (IMF) predicts strong growth for the next five years.
The proceeds of this growth are being invested in a prudent manner to position the economy well for future generations. International reserves now stand at more than five months of imports, the highest in the country’s history.
The President said that the enabling environment is not just about macro-economic policy but physical infrastructure as well that is being transformed to support businesses.
