Edward B. Beharry won the first place trophy in the commercial float category and the Mon Repos Mandir took away the first place in the large float category last night at the Diwali motorcade.
President Bharrat Jagdeo did make it to the LBI ground last night after returning from Barbados.
Dr. Jagdeo addressing a large gathering said “We need to use Diwali and this wonderful Hindu philosophy to remain positive because it is essentially a positive philosophy and I hope that we use this to make changes,” President Jagdeo said while making reference to some of the horrific murders in recent days.
According to a Government Information Agency’s statement, he described as depressing, the way in which so many young women and children are subject to brutal murders, calling for religious leaders and all other stakeholders in society to play their part in ending the scourge of domestic violence
“Abuse of women through domestic violence, abuse of our children… these values are alien to Hinduism, they are alien to the enlightenment which this festival speaks so eloquently about,” President Jagdeo said.
