Approximately 500 sugar workers attached to Enmore Sugar Estate this morning down tools to protest for an increase in salary. The workers claim they were approached by their union, the Guyana Agriculture Workers Union (GAWU) not to take strike action since they were in dialogue with the Guyana Sugar Corporation (Guysuco).
The workers said the time for discussions had ended and they were told that there will be an increase but were not told what the increase will be. In the meantime Guysuco will be losing millions of dollars per day with this action since some 500 punt cane were burnt last week and need to be cut.
The frustrated sugar workers said they will continue this strike action as long as it takes to get an increase in salary.
