Home Affairs Minister Clement Rohee has recommended to cabinet to approve the implementation to expedite the processing of machine readable passports at an additional cost.
The move came in the wake of frequent requests from Guyanese living overseas, who have to physically present themselves at the Central Immigration and Passport Office in Guyana as part of the provision of machine readable passports.
A fee schedule for expediting the processing of these passports will be announced shortly.
Guyana moved to issuing machine-readable passports in July 2007, with the aim of protecting against multiple issuance of travel documents to persons under fraudulent identities, by maintaining and checking all passport applications against a database of biometric information for all passport holders.
