Guyanese boss fires Trini woman from New York Bank after insulting her nationality

A Trinidadian woman is suing a New York bank claiming she was fired by her Guyanese boss because of ethnic tensions.

In a story carried in the New York Daily News, Shivana Persad, 26, is reported as saying that her boss described Trinidadians as "lazy" and "nickel-and-dime workers".

In fact he once told her: "You Trinis need to mind your own business," after Persad witnessed two co-workers having sex near a copy machine in March 2009, court papers say.

Persad worked at the Chase Manhattan’s South Richmond Hill, Queens, branch.

Guyanese co-workers got prized schedules while Persad worked six-day weeks to combat her boss’ prejudices, she charges, the Daily News reported.

Persad was fired in April 2009, months after she complained to human resources that she had not been paid for overtime, the report said.
