Children from the Ruimveldt Children’s Home located at 227 Freeman street East La Penitence braved the heavy rains around 4 am today to vacuate the building when care givers of the home notice smoke coming from the Garage area.
They were rescued by nearby residents and fire men from the Ruimveldt fire station responded promptly to save the building from going up in flames.
Only the Garage area was scorched.
Venessa Johnson the Programme Nurse of the institution said the fire started in the garage and could not understand what happened since there are no appliances there.
The only possible thing that can start a fire there is the electrical wires.
The Fire department did not give a report as to the cause of the fire.
The Ruimveldt Children’s home is a non Governmental and faith based organization that is funded by the Weslyn Church.
It is the home of twenty orphans.
