Fitug calls for Government’s immediate intervention in the ongoing sugar industry crisis.

Georgetown-The Federation of Independent Trade Unions of Guyana (FITUG), Guyana’s major Trade Union grouping, stated that whilst saddened over the deteriorating relations between the Guyana Sugar Corporation (Guysuco) and the workers’ bargaining agent, the Guyana Agricultural and General Workers Union (GAWU), after considering carefully the issues facing the industry and the workers, has no choice but to lend its support and solidarity to GAWU and its members.

FITUG explained that it is acutely aware of the challenges facing this vital industry which contributes significantly to Guyana’s economic stability. The Union stated that workers are not responsible for the rainy season and lost days. And sugar workers certainly do not fashion the Turnaround Plans and the programmes and policies which the employer, Guysuco, comes up with, the union posited. The Union added that since the industry is a key component of the country’s economy, perhaps it’s time for Government’s substantial intervention into the impasse
