Georgetown- The Police seem to think that they have the two main suspects in custody for the rape, beating and murder of 20 year old Leonaka Natasha Johnson, also called “Tasha”, of Nismes River View, West Bank Demerara, whose body was fished out of a canal not far from her residence. Johnson left the family home on Thursday at about 19:00h to meet the male police friend who was stationed at the Vreed-en-Hoop Police Station, but never returned home. Her body was discovered on Saturday in a canal in front of the woman’s home at about 06:00h. According to crime scene investigators the woman suffered a broken neck and was possibly sexually molested before being killed. Her body also bore several marks of violence. The young girl's police friend and her fiance are currently in custody at the La Grange police station. The brutal killing of Johnson has raised serious concerns among human rights activists and women rights organizations who are seeking maximum penalty for those responsible. Another case like this comes to mind during September 2010, when the corpse of Queens College student Neesa Gopaul was stuffed in a suitcase that was retrieved from Madewini Creek near the Emerald Tower Resort, battered almost beyond recognition. Her mother and lover has since been charged and incarserated for the murder.
