AFC says “Democracy in Guyana under attack “

Georgetown : The Alliance For Change (AFC) says the pressure that has been applied in coercing the proprietor of CNS 6 Mr. Chandra Narine Sharma to discontinue a programme entitled Keeping Them Honest conducted by Mr. Christopher Ram and Mr. Raymond Gaskin is truly disgraceful.

Mr. Sharma has said that the decision to discontinue the programme was taken for “regulatory reasons following a conversation I have had with the relevant authorities concerning the content of the programme.”

The Alliance For Change has noted over the years, the Soviet-Styled pressure the PPP has sought to exert on channel six for its grass root work and advocacy in the interests of the poor and voiceless.

What is very suspect in this matter is that prior to the television programme 'keeping them honest' on channel 6, Mr. Ram hosted and continues to host a similar programme on WRHM-Channel 7  called Plain Talk where similar critical views are shared and discussed. To date, the Jagdeo administration has shown no interest in discontinuing that programme precising because it knows that it cannot exert a similar intimidatory influence.

The PPP, devoid of any scruples is exploiting the issue of the controversial commentary by Anthony Vieira against Juan Edghill to pressure and victimize channel 6 into bowing to its control. It should be noted that the very commentary in question was aired on channel 9, but no pressure was brought to bear on HBTV. This is clear and present victimization and discrimination!

The programme keeping them honest served as a responsible discussion forum where a host of important political issues were critiqued and discussed. On such programmes, the Guyanese people got knowledge of the widespread corruption and ineptitude that is characteristic of the PPP.
