AG says crime must also be tackled socially

Bridgetown: Attorney General Adriel Brathwaite, thinks a two prong approach is needed to tackle the problem of crime in Barbados .

“I have said on more than one occasion that my ideal of fighting crime is not one of the Police going into communities with guns in their hands. We must offer solutions to the problems that are affecting those communities”. Brathwaite told Trakker News.

“It is not enough to raid communities and arrest a man or boy for having marijuana in their possession; the problem does not end with the person being charged. The next step is to find out what are the causes this anti-social behavior, after this is done we must find make them become useful citizens” Brathwaite said.

“A number of social agencies will have to play a role to in this effort” he added.

The Attorney General also stated his concern over the large number of young men who are incarcerated in the prison; something must be done to stop the downward spiral of the young Barbadian male.

Over 900 of them are currently in jail, these are men who should be playing a vital part in the development of their country says Brathwaite.
