Georgetown : The Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation’s Paediatric library received a quantity of children’s reading and story books from the former secretary of the Association of Guyanese Nurses and Allied Professionals (AGNAP), Mr. Gerald Shury, a London- Based, Native Guyanese.
AGNAP is a not-for-profit organization that assists nurses in Guyana, through various sponsored programmes and educational sessions. It has sponsored and worked with the library; and it continues to make donations of books and other educational materials to the library.
The group once held library sessions, and its members sat at children’s bedside and read to them. However, with the passing of one of its more vibrant and enthusiastic members, Nurse Pamela Mittleholzer, the structured library system and activities to some extent lost its zest.
Mr. Shury, although no longer a member of AGNAP has signaled his intention to continue his generosity towards the Paediatric Ward; however, the hospital is calling on interested groups and/ or individuals to volunteer their services by visiting the hospital to have this activity resuscitated.
GPHC management says the institution places great emphasis on educational activities and views this as extremely necessary, for those children are missing vital time in school due to their hospitalisation. Although some reading is done by the parents and nurses, it is hoped that this is developed into a more long-term and structured activity.
