Agriculture Minister Robert Persaud has called on officials from the National Drainage and Irrigation Authority (NDIA), Mahaica Mahaicony Abary/Agricultural Development Authority (MMA), Guyana Sugar Corporation (GuySuCo) and the Regional Administrations to up the ante and remain alert as the country is currently experiencing the effects of La Nina.
The Minister indicated that that within six days, the quantity of rainfall expected for the month of February has been exceeded.
Thus far, rainfall has surpassed the average 120 millilitres for February with a record 145 millilitres.
Minister Persaud said, it is anticipated that the La Nina condition will persist into March and as such, will require continued vigilance and support from all stakeholders in this regard so to remain alert because some days there will be five inches of rainfall, when the drainage system is build for two inches.
As such, the issue of dam maintenance should be emphasized in order to prevent flooding as this will negatively impact the livelihoods of residents.
