Georgetown: Minister of Agriculture Dr. Leslie Ramsammy has announced a new project that will help to reduce Guyana’s importation of several dairy products.
The Ministry of Agriculture in collaboration with the Mahaica Mahaicony Abary Agricultural Development Authority and the Guyana Livestock Development Authority is about to implement a livestock farm of about 500 acres with five cooperative groups. He said that venture, for which the ministry has already succeeded in getting the attention of investors, will look at production of pasteurised milk, cheese, yogurt, butter and ice cream.
The particular project will utilise trucks that will go to farms along the coast and collect milk to be converted into dairy products.
“We are on the road towards import substitution to reduce our import and therefore reduce the cost of imported food into our country,” Minister Ramsammy said.
