St. John’s, Antigua: A visiting Canadian couple and an airport security officer had handcuffs slapped on them after officials from the Organisation of National Drug and Money Laundering Control Policy (ONDCP) busted the couple after they walked through airport security with over US $200,000 worth of cocaine strapped to their bodies, the Antigua Observer reported.
The husband and wife, ages 49 and 36 respectively, were in the departure lounge and ready to head out to the boarding area when they were nabbed based on information the authorities had obtained.
While the names of the individuals in custody have been withheld since they have not been charged, sources said the security officer was arrested because the couple passed through his station unchecked, the Observer said.
The illegal substance that was allegedly found strapped to the bodies of the husband and wife under very loose clothing weighed approximately nine pounds or four kilos. The street value of one kilo of the contraband is estimated to be about US $52,000.
The Observer report said that the ONDCP officials took possession of the couple’s luggage that had already been checked in.
The couple was scheduled to depart Antigua some time after 5 pm on Saturday on an Air Canada flight.
