Algico workers fear job losses following sale of company

Port-of-Spain: Officials from the Banking, Insurance and General Workers Union have met with officials from insurance company, Algico, following reports that the company has been sold to  the Pan American Life Insurance group based in New Orleans.

Company officials met with staff this morning and they were unable to give any concrete assurances on job security.

Mario Als of the union says the union remains concerned about the issue.

He recalls that when MetLife bought Algico last year, 50 workers were sent home and now that the company has been sold to the Pan American Life Insurance group there is further uncertainty as to what will happen.

Pan American employs 800 people internationally and Algico has a staff base of 200 workers.
