Alleged rapist commits suicide

Berbice: Kamal Persaud Mithuram, 44, of Reliance, East Canje, who was charged on two counts of rape of his 16 and 14-year-old nieces, reportedly died after committing suicide.

The man allegedly ingested Pepsi laced with a weedicide on Phagwah Day and passed away while being treated at the New Amsterdam Hospital on Wednesday around 16:00hrs.

A relative of Persaud told TrakkerNews that the man was taken to the hospital after he complained about drinking spoiled Pepsi on Phagwah Day.  On Wednesday, when relatives showed up at the hospital to visit, the man had died. He had previously ingested a poisonous substance and survived.  The police are awaiting a post-mortem report on the body to conclude how the man died.

The deceased had allegedly begun “losing his mind” after he was charged with raping two of his nieces in 2011.  It was alleged that on November 2 and between October 29 and November 5, 2011, Mithuram, a cane harvester, raped the children.  He appeared before Magistrate, Adela Nagamootoo, at Reliance Magistrate’s Court charged for two counts of rape, and was eventually granted $150,000 bail. The matter was set to come up again on March 28 for report and fixture for the commencement of a preliminary inquiry.
