Almond Beach closure a major economic lost

Bridgetown.

General Secretary of the Barbados Workers Union (BWU) Sir Roy Trotman, says the impending closure of Almond Beach Village will amount to a greater economic lost for Barbados than just 500 jobs.

The veteran trade unionist, is calling for the intervention of Prime Minister Freundel Stuart and the full involvement of the Social Partnership to prevent the closure of Barbados largest hotel at the end of the month.

Sir Roy warned that 2000 Barbadians, not just the 500 people employed at the hotel would be casualties of the pending closure.

Speaking to journalist at BUW headquarters, Sir Roy expressed his disapointment over the decision by Neal & Massy the hotel major shareholders to close the hotel on April 30.

"Neal and Massy in Barbados is very prominent member of the Social Partnership through Barbados Shipping & Trading Company Limited, the Social Partnership demands that where we have any major layoffs that in the interest stability of the country that company has a responsibility to meet with the Social Partners and apprise them of what is going on, and let us see whether we are able to put together a national response to save the country from crisis", Sir Roy said.

He added the decision taken by Neal and Massy to close the hotel shows a singular lack of social corporate responsibility.
