Amerindian Affairs Permanent Secretary arrested over allege bribery

Georgetown: Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Amerindian Affairs, Sharon Hicks was on Thursday afternoon arrested after allegedly demanding bribes from a contractor who paid her with marked bills that were retrieved during a sting operation carried out by the Police.

The 42 years old of West Bank Demerara (WBD) was arrested at her Quamina and Thomas Streets, South Cummingsburg Office for demanding money by menace.

The Permanent Secretary was released on bail but investigations into the matter are ongoing.

Police noted that a sting operation was conducted where marked bills were reportedly paid to the PS by the businessman. Those bills were found in her possession.

He said that the police were contacted pertaining to Ms. Hicks demands for payments from a contractor.

Reports indicate that the payments were ongoing for several months and the businessman was allegedly threatened that he would not receive contracts if those monies were not paid monthly.
