Prime Minister Samuel Hinds who is performing the duties of president, was accorded a warm welcome when he visited St. Cuthbert’s Mission Village on Saturday for their Amerindian Heritage Month celebrations.
He urged them to recognise other ethnic cultures even as they maintain focus on keeping their own alive.
The Prime Minister pointed to the growth of the community, the roads and the secondary school even as he emphasised that all Guyanese must work to improve their communities and the country as a whole. Government built a modern secondary school in the community, to ensure that children access education right in their community. It also spent a large sum on building the road to the Region Four community.
He commended the late Dr. Cheddi Jagan for declaring September as Amerindian month, even as he noted the merging of ways of life around the country.
PM Hinds noted that with the recognition that citizens must work towards development, the administration has committed to education which can be seen in new schools around the country. He also pointed to strides made to improve the provision of health services and electricity in the hinterland. The Prime Minister explained that all communities which have not been served will soon be connected.
The gathering was a make-up of the predominantly Arawak community and their visitors. The residents displayed their cultural heritage for their visitors, proving that their culture is being kept alive through traditional dances, songs, skits and the booths which were on display, offering food, beverages and ornaments made by Amerindians.
