Georgetown: Relatives of Shinelle Clarke who succumbed at the Georgetown Public Hospital 2 days ago are claiming she died due to negligence. Management of the hospital explained that Ms. Clarke was referred from Skeldon Hospital to New Amsterdam Hospital to GPHC on 6 September, 2011 and arrived at 01:13h for management of abdominal tenderness with guarding, and query for ruptured Ectopic pregnancy.
The patient was seen at A&E by the OB/GYN team. She was subsequently prepped for surgery; her mother was advised by the surgeon and signed the consent form. The surgery was completed; patient was critical and was transferred to the ICU. The patient was provided with four (4) units of packed cells.
Patient subsequently died at the ICU and her mother, aunt and another relative were advised within 15mins by the ICU doctor. Relatives were presumably dissatisfied with the advice given and they approached the CEO’s Office and the Office of the Nursing Director. The patient’s mother was advised accordingly by the CEO and the Director and asked to return the following day, after the PM would have been conducted, however they did not turn up.
The results from the PM have not yet been submitted, therefore, no further comments can be made regarding the cause of the patient’s death, the hospital said.
