Georgetown: “So the quality of the supply is going to go up automatically, the frequency of outage is going to be reduced, the quality of voltage is going to be improved, and people are going to see a dramatic improvement in supply.” The words of GPL's Chief Executive Officer Bharat Dindyal, speaking about the US$40 million dollar equipment to boost the company’s infrastructure development projects. Recently there have been constant power outages at long hours causing much frustration to consumers who raised concerns about the age old dilemma facing GPL and it's poor power supply. In the last decade millions of dollars have been spent on brand new Wartsilla generating sets to boost supply and signifcantly improve the power sector, yet the company complains of shortfalls and losses. Once again the GPL chairman assured consumers that when the new equipment is installed, there would be a reduction of generation loss, and stable electricity.
He added that the project will deal extensively with the company’s ability to deliver reliable power to consumers, “it will improve dramatically the quality of supply; it is going to enable us to offload all of our large feeders, which are pretty close to the terminal limits.”
Dindyal said too that with the new project, GPL will deliver bulk power to the central West Coast and those new substations are going to regulate voltage automatically. The Prime Minister who is responsible for the power sector said that the losses overall are about 30-31 per cent. "We have high technical losses… they need investments such as these to improve. All together, some US$30 million in this alone which will include the transmission system, but we still need to contemplate improving the secondary distribution system and indeed configuring it to tackle the commercial losses". "We still need another significant investment in that area.” He estimated that another US$35 million is needed.
