The Pine Hill Dairy ( PHD) has encounter a number of stumbling blocks in getting its milk into Jamaica.
Chief Executive Officer of Banks Holding Limited Richard Cozier, the parent company of PHD yesterday said the Jamaican authorities were charging duties on milk from Barbados that they were not imposing on non CARICOM countries.
Cozier said what was more alarming that there was a general consumption tax of two and a half percent. which not be imposed on Jamaica manufactured milk but PHD would have to pay.
"If milk came is imported from outside the region the consumption tax is not paid. I am at lost why milk from the United States, the United Kingdom and South Africa can get into Jamaica free of the general consumption tax but milk from Barbados, a CARICOM nation, would be subject to it", Cozier said.
