APNU calls on GECOM to rectify several deficiencies before close of poll

Georgetown : A Partnership for National Unity (A.P.N.U) this afternoon raised concerns over several deficiencies, irregularities and inefficiencies which have occurred in the course of the General and Regional Elections today.

A.P.N.U wishes to alert the general public, international observers and the Guyana Elections Commission that, unless the faults are rectified within the remaining hours, the integrity and validity of the elections could be compromised.

APNU says a  report was received that an elector was informed that “he had already voted” when he attempted to vote.  Other electors reported that their names ‘did not appear’ on the OLE.

A report was received that appointed elections officials were not given ‘Certificates of Employment’ to permit them to cast their vote at the places at which they were employed.

A report was received that employees of the bauxite company – RUSAL – in the Upper Demerara-Berbice Region were not released from work to enable them to cast their vote.

A report was received that previously unregistered and unknown polling stations had been brought into operation.  Parties did not nominate polling agents to these stations.

Several civilians in plain clothes appeared with armbands marked ‘RC’ in place of regular policemen appeared at rural polling stations.

A Partnership for National Unity calls on the Guyana Elections Commission to respond to these complaints and rectify these errors before the close of poll.
