Essequibo : A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) Member of Parliament Mr. Joseph Harmon and a team of advisers from the Opposition in the National Assembly visited the community of Aliki on the Essequibo River. The visit was arranged after several complaints were made by residents about conditions in the riverain farming community.
Residents told the MP that even though the government had awarded a contract for the construction of a koker years ago, to date that project remains uncompleted. This has caused the farming community grave hardship. Some difficulties identified were farmers cannot get their produce easily from the backlands; produce being damaged because of the mode of transport from the farms; flooding and several other daily challenges. Residents also complained about predatory animals (tigers and jaguars) killing their cows and dogs and the Ministry of Home Affairs slow movement on their applications for firearms to protect their livestock.
Harmon told the residents that he would raise their problems with the respective ministries and agencies and promised to return shortly to see what progress has been made. Joseph Harmon is the APNU’s Shadow Minister of Public Infrastructure and also has responsibility for Region 3.
