APNU supports East Bank Berbice protest

Georgetown : A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) has declared its full support for residents of East Bank Berbice in the East Berbice-Corentyne. The Berbice residents picketed the National Assembly to call attention to their more than 3 decades of complaints about the deteriorating public road that runs from New Amsterdam to Mara.

 

APNU has noted that there have been no allocations in the 2013 budget to fix the deplorable East Bank road.  APNU also noted that sums were allocated in the 2013 National Budget for other road works but none for the East Bank Berbice public road.

 

Residents reported that they had complained personally to President Donald Ramotar and had made previous attempts to take their problem to relevant authorities. The road, however, was never repaired despite official promises.

 

Residents’ concerns continue to be ignored by the Ministry of Public Works. They report that the road in its current deplorable state has not only caused inconvenience and discomfort over the years but the cost of transportation has become so prohibitive that children cannot afford to travel to school every day.

 

APNU calls on the Ministry of Public Works to fix the road.
