APNU’s Harmon interacts with Berbice residents on housing and water issues

Harmon visits Berbice

Berbice : A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) Shadow Minister responsible for Public Infrastructure, Housing and Water    Mr. Joseph Harmon attended a Town Hall meeting at the Guyana Teacher’s Union Auditorium, Vryman’s Erven, New Amsterdam. The meeting was held by residents of Angoy’s  Avenue to discuss the regularization of their community, land titling and other matters of interest.

Over 100 residents attended the meeting which was chaired by Community Leader  Ms. Patricia Lynch.  Harmon told the residents that  APNU’s representation was geared towards the benefit of the entire community regardless of political affiliation. He said that one of the Partnership’s primary concern was human development. Mr. Harmon informed the residents that in his capacity as Shadow Minister responsible for Housing, he has been working consistently with the Ministry of Housing and Water to regularize squatting. “The people of  Angoy’s Avenue have been living in squalor for over 40 years…the time has come for this community to be regularized, with land titling, proper roads, potable water and reliable electricity.”

Harmon told the residents that the Ministry of Housing had begun an occupational survey of their community and that  landsurveyors had completed their preliminary work. He said that the Community Development Officers will  soon begin  working to finalize the occupational surveys and address  any other issues that the residents may have.

The meeting also discussed other matters of interest to the residents of Berbice including the Peoples Progressive Party –Civic refusal to reduce the Berbice River Bridge toll, the deplorable condition of roads in New Amsterdam and its environs, inadequate water and electricity supply and youth unemployment.

Mr. Harmon was accompanied to the Town Hall meeting by Mr. Ron Backer Political Assistant in the Office of the Leader of the Opposition Mr. Jevaughn Stephen Regional Chairman (PNCR) East Berbice – Corentyne Region, APNU Member of Parliament Ms. Annette Ferguson and Mr. Jermaine Hermanstine Executive member of the Guyana Public Service Union.
