East Bank Demerara: The police are investigating an incident that occurred at about 2 PM. today at 19th Street, Diamond, EBD, during which gold miner Donald Caiton, 49 years; hairdresser Niomi Singh,19 years; and taxi-driver Mahendra Singh, 29 years, were shot and injured by two men armed with handguns. Investigations revealed that the two armed men went to the home of Niomi Singh’s grandmother who resides in the front house of the yard and called out for her. She went out to them and was used by the two men to go to the other house in the yard where the three victims reside. The grandmother was forced to call out for the occupants who suspected that it was a robbery attempt.
Consequently Donald Caiton and Mahendra Singh confronted the two armed men and a scuffle ensued during which the two armed men managed to free themselves and while escaping discharged several rounds at them.
Donald Caiton was shot to his left knee, while Niomi Singh was shot to her left thigh and Mahendra Singh received a gunshot injury to his left side.
They were taken to the GPHC for medical attention where they were treated and sent away.
