Acting Prime Minister Errol McLeod has called for a review of this country’s Occupational Safety and Health legislation.
McLeod made the statement today as he delivered the feature address at a symposium at the Hyatt Regency Trinidad hotel hosted by the American Chamber of business.
McLeod, this country’s substantive Labour Minister, says the main occupational health issue facing this country is that of  "falling objects".

President of the Public Service Association (PSA), Watson Duke, is calling for public servants to walk from the Eric Williams Financial Complex, in downtown Port of Spain, to deliver a "simple letter" to Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar’s office in St Clair today.
The "war" for public servants to have their salary negotiation settled, begins at 12 noon today.

The Guyana Bauxite and General Workers Union (GB&GWU) recently issued a five-day ultimatum to Oldendorff Carrier to proceed on industrial action if the company refuses to come to the bargaining table with an appropriate proposal. The ultimatum expires on September 27 and the notice was duly issued consistent with Article 6:3 of the Collective Labour Agreement. The Union and company have been locked in negotiation for increased wages and improve working conditions for year 2010, since June.

This evening, a family of five is left homeless, after fire which emanated from the ceiling destroyed their home. The Rajkumar family reported smelling something burning, and upon investigating found the ceiling ablaze, Within minutes the fire spread throughout the house, as the family ran for safety. Luckily no one was injured in the blaze, but the house was gutted, leaving the family with millions in losses.
 

 

The main opposition party asked, when will the President authorise a full independent investigation of the apparent mismanagement, malfeasance and downright illegalities which contributed to the demise of CLICO (Guyana)? 

Chief Justice (Ag), Ian Chang, according to a recent report, ordered that the Bank of Guyana be appointed as liquidator to execute the wind-up order and this is expected to pave the way for the government to make good on its assurance of guaranteeing the policies and investment held by Guyanese in CLICO.”
 

Justice Minister Herbert Volney came in for criticism from the Appeal Court as a retrial was ordered today for Colin Edghill and Marcus Marshall.
Volney was the trial judge when Edghill and Marshall were last year found guilty for the  2003 killing of businessman Russell Govia.
Court of Appeal Judges Paula-Mae Weekes, Rajendra Narine and Alice Yorke-Soo Hon criticised Volney for not having a voir dire when the jury was empanelled.

Policy holders of  the collapsed Clico Guyana will soon receive appoinment dates, implementing the decisions announced by

President Bharrat Jagdeo last Thursday .  Government injected $3.8 billion dollars to ensure policy holders are repaid.

Finance Minister, Dr. Ashni Singh ,in a recent panel discussion stated that government has been engaged at every stage in the process to safeguard the assets of the insurance company and to ensure that they were managed in a way that was consistent with the provisions of the Act governing judicial management.

Cabinet has approved an increase in maternity leave to 14 weeks, acting Prime Minister Errol Mc Leod said today.
Mc Leod made the statement as he addressed the Employers’ Consultative Association at the Hyatt Regency Hotel today. The current maternity leave is 13 weeks.
Mc Leod said Cabinet decided on the increase during a Cabinet meeting two weeks ago.
 

The three month trial of opening the Priority Bus Route (PBR) to the
public ends next week Thursday.
The Ministry of Works and Transport opened the PBR to the public for specific periods in an effort to tackle traffic woes.
The Works Ministry is now calling on the public to participate in a survey to determine how effective the trial period was on its website
