Soesdyke –
The police conducted a drug eradication operation at Swan, Soesdyke/Linden Highway, yesterday.
A field of about one acre in size with marijuana plants between four feet and eight feet in height, along with a nursery containing over 500 seedlings were found and destroyed.
The ranks also searched three houses during which an unlicensed 12 gauge single barrel shotgun with two matching cartridges and 44.5 kilograms of dried cannabis sativa (marijuana) were found.

Three men and two females have been arrested and are in police custody assisting with the investigations.

 

Foulis, Enmore East Coast Demerara- An alcoholic from 3rd street Foulis in Enmore died yesterday at the Georgetown Hospital after he was pelted some 10 yards when he came into contact with the driver of a pickup. The man who is well known in the village as Duckbar, was reportedly heavily intoxicated and came in the path of the driver while on the railway embankment road. The man ended up with his hands and feet behind his back barely breathing. He was rushed to the hospital with both his hands and feet broken, succumbing hours later.

Georgetown– Police this morning have launched an investigation into the failed attack at the home of former PPP parliamentarian Philomena Sahoye-Shury last evening. According to reports, someone hurled channa bomb intended for the balcony, but luckily it was grilled and the device fell in the yard. The veteran politician vowed to find those responsible with the help of the Police, she did not say whether she believes, that the attempt was politically motivated.

 Georgetown – Secretary to the Defense Board Dr. Roger Luncheon disclosed that the Guyana Defense Force has launched an investigation to find the source of the grenade which exploded at the Stabroek Market square killing one man and injuring 19 others.

Dr. Luncheon said he cannot say how long the investigation will take since the government will not disclose the army’s stock.

Sophia, Georgetown– The Central Executive Committee of the PNC/R has approved 5 nominees for it’s Presidential candidate slot. General Secreatry of the party Oscar Clarke said that the Party’s Presidential Candidate Process Committee met for its first meeting for the year 2011 on Tuesday last and reviewed the position with respect to responses received from the nine nominees, who had previously indicated their acceptance of the nomination, and submitted their relevant Curriculum Vitae and Bio Data by the closing date January 3, 2011.

Georgetown–  Four days after being shot by a lone bandit at his business place, Linden businessman Albert Joseph took his last breath last evening. Doctors say that he took a turn for the worse yesterday and was rushed to the Intensive Care Unit, where he died.The gunman entered the premises Tuesday last and held the businessman at gunpoint, demanding cash and other valuables, when Joseph pushed his hand in his pocket for the money, he was shot. The lone gunman made off with a gold chain and a mere $10,000 in cash at the cost of Joseph’s life.

Hundreds of people, including school children, turned at the National Academy for Performing Arts (NAPA) today to bid farewell to this counrty’s first president, Sir Ellis Clarke.

Georgetown – Early this morning four armed bandits, two of whom were armed with hand guns held up two security guards at Survival Super Market at Vlissengen Road, Georgetown and placed them to lie on the ground. The police who are carrying out their investigation say, one of the men stood guard while the others broke into the supermarket and took away a quantity of articles before escaping.
No one has yet been arrested for the robbery.
 

Sophia, Georgetown – The People’s National Congress/Reform (PNC/R) today says the ruling People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) has a sinister plan to remain in office beyond the constitutional deadline. The main opposistion blamed President Jagdeo that he had made several efforts to stay in office after his two terms. The party claims that one option the President may have sought is to delay the 2011 election if there is a national emergency.

Georgetown – Mark Hoosein of Fourth Street, Cummings Lodge, ECD, and Rhomayne Li, 18 years of Cummings Street, Alberttown, Georgetown, were today charged with unlawful possession of explosives and throwing explosive in a public place. They appeared before Magistrate Judy Latchmansingh at the Sparendaam Magistrate Court where they pleaded guilty and were each fined $30,000.00 on the charge of unlawful possession of explosives and $10,000.00 on the other charge. The charges follow investigations into an incident that occurred at about 1:30h.
