Bridgetown, Barbados: The Chief Executive Officer of the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Dr Dexter James is calling for legislation to prevent Barbadians from abandoning the elderly at the island’s main heath institution.
Speaking at a press conference Dr. James said “Some Barbadians are taking their elderly relatives to hospital and not returning for them when they are discharged. The cost of keeping these elderly people in the hospital is about  $500 daily”.

GDF Headquarters, Georgetown-  In congratulating the Guyana Defence Force for the progress in efficiency, budgeting and standing orders, the President said his Government will continue to capitalize the army and urged members to examine the growth of expenditure over the past decade. The Commander in chief added ; "We have progressively increased the budget of the army every year and expect that all will operate within the confines of fiscal sustainability".

Camp Ayangana Georgetown- In a statement that puts him on the spot and the media barred from listening in, President Bharrat Jagdeo said that he will not arrest Surinamese President Desi Bouterse, in the wake of wikileaks about his involvement in drug links with convicted Guyanese drug dealer Roger Khan. Speaking at the opening conference of the Guyana Defense Force this morning, Jagdeo commented on the issue following a question from an army personnel.

Georgetown -The Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA) Implementation Unit of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Secretariat is set to collaborate with the Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA) for a second time, this year, in the delivery of a training seminar. Scheduled to begin on 25 January in Georgetown, Guyana, the two-day undertaking is directed at customs brokers in Guyana. 

Soesdyke Highway -The police are investigating a fatal accident that occurred yesterday at Long Creek, Soesdyke/Linden Highway, and which resulted in the death of pedestrian Eddie Williams, 18 years of Long Creek.

The police say motor car PFF 6707 was proceeding along the roadway when it is alleged that Eddie Williams attempted to cross the road and was struck down.
He was taken to the Diamond Diagnostic Centre where he was pronounced dead on arrival..

The driver of the motor car is in police custody assisting with the investigations.

 Lacytown, Georgetown – A female motorcyclist was riding along Robb Street, Lacytown a few minutes ago, when two men rode up alongside her and lash her off her motorcycle. The men then snatch a bag from the woman who  was left in a state of shock and drenched in blood. Public spirited citizens rushed her to the hospital.

Rupununi- Police continue to maintain a presence in the Rupununi area hoping to find others who were reportedly involved with wanted man Wycliff Smith who eluded capture for quite some time with several arrest warrants issued for him. His capture disclosed the whereabouts of a dead brazilian buried some where in the Rupununi area after confessing to killing him. The murder would have unsolved had it not been for the escape of another Brazilian during the act. The Brazilian managed to report the murder to the police and aid in th subsequent arrest of the accused.

West Coast Demerara -Today Desiree Jeffers, 58 years of Parfait Harmonie Housing Scheme, was arraigned before Magistrate Ms. N. Hatmin at the Vreed-en-Hoop Magistrate’s Court on a charge of Murder and was remanded to prison until 2011-01-31.
Desiree Jeffers was charged with the murder of interdicted Police Constable Igriss Bobb-Blackman whose body was found in a septic tank at his residence at Parfait Harmonie on Thursday January 20, 2011.
