Background checks on Customs and Immigrations officers at GAIA

Bridgetown.

Customs and Immigration officers working at the Grantley Airport(GAIA)  are upset that brackground checks mandated by the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) are being conducted  by police officers.

According to a source, officials from the Customs Department expressed they dissatisfaction with the stipulation at a meeting with the National Union of Public Workers(NUPW)  recently.

The source   told Trakker News Customs officers have asked the question: If they  have the same authority of the police in the execution of their duty; why can't the Customs officers do they own background checks?

"Many of us are curious about the extent of the background checks. When members of the public are seeking to join the Police Force, people go into their district and ask questions about them.We don't know what line these check would follow", the source said.

He added that officers of the Customs and ImmigrationDepartments think that it is unreasonable they have been single out for such scrutiny.
